I became aware of this punch at my cousin's wedding in the late 50's. The punch-making and sampling began well before the reception by a couple of my uncles and my mother, who was the church organist. Things got off to a lively start when my mom played Here Comes the Bride in polka time. Later that evening, the bride's younger brother mistakenly drank a couple of glasses of the rum punch before folks realized what had happened. Too late. The Telkwa Hall was in full swing and so was my cousin. Needless to say, this punch is our most requested family recipe, and is sure to be a hit ... with young and old!
3 bottles dark rum
1 bottle port wine
1 large can pineapple juice
1 large can orange juice
1 large bottle lime rickey, or 2 to taste
3 large bottles ginger ale (Canada Dry, eh ... what else?)
Orange, lemon and lime slices
Ice - 1 large block plus 2 to 3 large bags of ice cubes
You require a large crock for this. Pour all ingredients over a large block of ice or a couple of large bags of ice cubes. Let stand for two hours before serving. Add orange, lemon and lime slices. Add more ginger ale if you wish. Keep some additional ice on hand.
Serves 50 people, at two drinks per person, unless my cousin hears about your party. This recipe can be easily doubled or tripled, depending how many people are standing outside the hall waiting to get in for a dance.
