P.S. Don’t Tell Your Mother Well, you can tell her about a new book by Margo Bates
VANCOUVER, Canada Margo Bates got an early start to her writing career. When she was ten-years-old, her grandmother began a correspondence with her that lasted for over thirty years.
The result is Bates’ first book: P.S. Don’t Tell Your Mother.
Part fact, part fiction, the story is about Nana Noonan, who is somewhat of a local legend in Canada’s Pacific Northwest. Telkwa (Pop. 852) in the late 50’s and early 60’s was not much different from other small towns across North America. Every town reluctantly owned a Nana. Or wished it did.
An Irish temper and accuracy with a gun is what gets Nana Noonan into trouble. Her granddaughter Maggie Mulvaney learns it pays off to have a sense of humor, as Nana uses hers to get out of more than a few jams along the way. By setting bad examples around Telkwa, Nana teaches Maggie that it is important to be fair to your fellow humans. As long as they don’t drive you to do something foolish.
“The richness of life in the North Western part of British Columbia, Canada is truly something to be celebrated. Northerners are a unique lot, and we have a distinct voice,” Bates says. “They say that you can take the girl out of the North, but you can’t take the North out of the girl. I agree. Who would want to?”
P.S. Don’t Tell Your Mother is published by AuthorHouse of Bloomington Indiana. The publisher was recommended to Bates through her association with the Erma Bombeck Humor Writers’ Workshop.
